Anne Boleyn was the second and most infamous of Henry VIII’s wives. King Henry met Anne Boleyn in the mid-1520s and was captivated by her sophistication, wit, and her youth. Henry had been married to his first wife, Katherine of Aragon, for more than fifteen years but only managed to produce one living child, Mary. Henry was obsessed with securing the Tudor dynasty and to do that he needed at least one male heir. What his first wife couldn’t give him, Anne Boleyn promised she would – a son.
Henry was so desperate to divorce Katherine and marry Anne that he left the catholic church and created his own Church of England where he was the ultimate head of the church so he could get his divorce. King Henry and Anne Boleyn were married in 1533 and quickly produced a child – Elizabeth. No doubt both were disappointed that the child was a girl but Anne soon became pregnant again. Unfortunately, she miscarried and King Henry took this as a sign that God did not approve of his marriage and would not grant him sons. After only three years of marriage, Henry sent Anne to the scaffold where she was beheaded on trumped-up charges of adultery with multiple courtiers. The day after Anne’s execution, Henry became engaged to Jane Seymour and she became his third wife ten days later.
The ANNE BOLEYN candle is a French lilac scent that was chosen because of Anne’s early years spent at the royal court in France. There she became fluent in French as well as the game of courtly love and brought with her to England the latest fashions and styles of the cultured French women. Anne was not said to be a beautiful woman, but it was her “Frenchness” that fascinated Henry and made her irresistible to him.
